Should I publish to Flash Player 6 or 7? 2004-03-09 - By Jesse Warden
Back Depends on the project.
Usually, the client wants a speicific version, so I have no choice.
Other times, they want functiuonality, so player versions that are newer take precedence.
There are components out there (check Flashcom archives), that can show images in text fields pretty well (emulated/smoke and mirrors), and you can still get all of the Flash 6 market.
Embarissingly, I've never used the Flash 7 Player features. So far, the Flash 6 Player has all I need, but if you need that feature, and your deadline is tight, go for it! You can always refactor later...

Okay here is a question which I think is a very good question.
Some things are easier to do when publishing to Flash Player 7. For example, dynamically displaying images in a textfield, for say, a chat app with unique user avatars. I'm pretty sure the same thing can be done publishing to Flash Player 6, but with a lot more trouble (I mean more difficult programming).
So, if something is much easier to do in Flash Player 7, should I publish to Flash Player 7? I mean, for the 50% or whatever of users who just have Flash Player 6, will their player automatically update (and do so quickly) when they encounter my Flash Player 7 app (if it's properly setup to detect the player version and update it or whatever).
Or could you at least tell me (yes or no):
In general, would you advise going the easy route (publishing to Flash Player 7) when something is more difficult to do for Flash Player 6?
Thanks
Ed
