Conceptual - Creative Question.... 2006-12-20 - By Michael Hood
Back Do we get to ride in one of the jets if your boss picks one of our ideas?! :-P
First, I think it's a bit unrealistic to only show the aircraft's performance rating using "X" number of passengers on a perfect, windless day with zero baggage.
I might have a look at some actual flight charts and make the flight paths to/from each major airport more dynamic (and accurate), according to the charts. As the user hovers over a particular city, highlight it, and generate the flight paths from that city to each destination city within it's range, given the number of passengers (the user provides/selects), baggage and cargo, assuming a full tank of fuel with no stops. Perhaps at the apex of each of the flight paths you could dynamically display the number of miles, the estimated flight time to the destination, actual fuel consumption per whatever the weight is of the cargo/passengers/crew, etc., and so on.
If you don't have access to that kind of information, you could invest in a couple flight calculators and some charts and crunch the numbers yourself (if you know what you are doing) or maybe hit up a pilot training facility and have the instructors make it a classroom exercise, for the ground school - perhaps there's even a site out there that does the conversions for a couple bucks??
I would also offer more realistic, "worse case" scenarios (max passengers/baggage/crew/headwind), or make it so the user can input his own information and have Flash do the math and display the results. Definitely show the number of hours the flight might take, so the typical user can "get it" in terms he/she understands.
I'm unclear as to whether your company sells the aircraft, or just wants a "tool" for the execs, so they can figure out where they can go on their jets. If it's to sell the jet, I'd put in all kinds of realistic data, including load balancing/planning, fuel consumption rates at altitudes, etc., whatever else might impact the performance of the aircraft. If it's to be used for people to plan a trip, I might include things like trip time to/from the destination airport to/from the hotel when they arrive, what hotels are available (with the info so they can book a room in advance) Whether I was a buyer or a flyer, I'd rather see more realistic data than hyper-optimistic data built from conditions that just never really exist (whether I could use it, or not - I'm kinda wired that way).
