Can  someone give me a clue on how to import an HDRI background into a
Carrara  scene,

Click on Scene in the right properties tray.  Then click on the little  down
arrows beside Background (it shows up in the right properties tray after
you've clicked on Scene).  You'll see HDRI as one of the choices.   Click on
the
blue button to the right of the word File.  At that point you  can browse to
where you have the HDRI file stored on your hard drive.  You  won't see any
difference until you do either a full render or a quick render in  the assembly
room.  But it will be there and affect the lighting, etc. of  your scene.
