Hi Auggy,

My response to your post last night did not seem to go through so I am
trying again.

The feature you are looking for is something I have been requesting
for some time now in Carrara.  In C4D, I believe the render tag is
called "Seen by Rays" and it can do pretty much do what you are
looking for.

However, in Carrara, you have to do it another way.  There are several
methods to approach this, based on the complexity of the scene, but
basically what you will need to do is render the scene WITH the plane
object in it and then render the scene WITHOUT the plane object in it.
Then, in Photoshop, you can simply combine the two scenes by using a
MASK that will only show the sphere that does not contain the plane
object reflection, while showing the rest of the scene, containing the
plane object, etc.

Here is a sample image that I did for you the other day -
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Carrara/files/Selocic%20Stuff/reflection_test
_001.jpg>.
Notice that foreground middle sphere *is not reflected* in the larger
background sphere.   This was done with a simple horizontal mask
because of the composition of the scene, however, for more complex
scenes, masks can be generated and used from alpha channels,
g-buffers, etc; or you can simply create one with a polygon lasso
selection tool. ;)   It just depends on your scene.

I will be happy to go over details of setting this up for your scene
in Carrara or Photoshop, if necessary.  Just let me know.

Well, hope that help some.

Cheers.

Claudia
