Yes, Viewpoint models could be imported into Atmosphere, and I was told at a 3D trade show by a Viewpoint rep that they contributed much to the development of Atmosphere.

Eric, I think what buggers everybody is the business model for web 3D. If no one figures out how to make money on it beyond advertising novelty, open source x3d will have time to evolve and fill the void. (I hope Carrara 6 will import/export x3D.)
With the acquisition of SketchUp, Google Earth is now in the web 3D business, though only for architecture and static, geopositioned objects. The kml format, which locates all vertices, lines and polygons by geographic coordinates, might be very limiting when it comes to moving an object around, as polar coordinates are not invariant, as xyz coordinates are, and constant conversion might be computationaly costly. (I also hope Carrara 6 will export to kml, once the geolocation and orientation of the object is specified.)
It would be especially nice if the Google Earth viewer would support a Rich3D plugin, so that full-featured, animated objects could be shown in Google Earth. Imagine a life flight helicopter built in Carrara and exported to Google Earth via a Rich3D exporter, so that the chopper could take off from one place and land at another in an entirely realistic way.
This points to the "killer ap" that I think would breathe life into business models for web 3D--an application that served as a venue for animated features. They could be much like 3D game visualization, but allowed to play out to a greater degree, with the interactivity emphasizing point of view rather than game play.
Where web3D has life currently is in massive multiplayer games. Movie makers borrow motifs from that venue, but they have yet to see it as a conveyance medium where they action plays out as the user gets to be the cameraman. Not really a role playing experience, not really passive either.
This is a new frontier, and I wish DAZ had a blue-sky research and development effort I could join to explore such possibilities. All the great CG animation and effects houses got that way through R&D: LucasArts, Industrial Light and Magic, Pixar. If DAZ wants to be truely great in its domain, it needs an exploratory R&D component.
I think if DAZ Studio or Carrara could choreograph and publish to Rich3D a dramatic interaction between characters, it would be like watching a stage play from any seat in the house, or right up on stage with the characters, except the characters are all CG.
That would be a "killer app," I'm sure of it.
