Back I'd like to see it applicable to almost anything - e.g. in the color channel so you could get a "velvet" effect or one color rolling off to another..
Shoestring does that.

Yes, translucency transmits light, with almost any shader also - bitmaps etc. Fresnel is in transparency , reflectivity and SSS. Translucency is great for leaves.
