Hi Steve,

Have you looked into Sony Acid Xpress?  It is the freeware version of
Acid Music Studio and Acid Pro.  It has fewer bells and whistles but
for being free, it is okay.  I have the full Music Studio version and
am satisfied with that for now, especially since it comes with loops
that you can use to design your own music.

Here is the link: <http://www.acidplanet.com/tools/?p=acid&T=2956>
The freeware version is on the third link on the left under "Music
Creation".

Also, you can try one of the Magix products, however, be aware that a
lot of their stuff is now being sold at places like Best Buy and at
computer shows for a fraction of the cost, so I suggest checking those
places out first before purchasing it online
<http://www.magix.com/select.html>.  I have bought most of my Magix
software for under $15 (full versions).  For your needs, probably even
an earlier version would do fine.  The only problem I found with Magix
software is that their products were GUI and graphics hogs and
sometimes make it a challenge to edit sound clips on my older Windows
98 machine.  There were definite lags in performance.  But on a faster
machine, it should probably be okay.

Cheers.

conjunction with Carrara and am still a bit new at this part of the
software. I found a program called Audacity 1.2.3. and its open source
and seems to do a pretty good job at cutting and pasting bits and
pieces of sound and saving them as wav files, but I'd still like to
get some feedback from anyone who has maybe found something better and
also am curious if the sound in C5 is more or less the same as C4-P or
if it has by chance seen any new development as well.
