Back It's a good idea (and there's nothing wrong with) backing up a copy of the downloaded file, and a text file containing the serial number or key or whatever needed to unlock and use it, in case you have a disk crash or laptop stolen or move on to a new fater PC a year later, and you quickly want to re-install it.
I also recommend printing the receipt from the electronic order email confi8rmation or web form page that shows the registration key too, and use that printed page to fold into a placeholder for the backup CD so both are nicely together.
And if you too easily loose stuff, why not make a second backup CD to keep somewhere else. When CD-RW's cost 30 cents or less it's a nobrainer.
You can get a CD scratched and it's most unlikely that you'll get a replacement CD from the manufacturer. Happened to me for a game, where the first of 3 disks went bad and I can't install it anymore.
When you already have a CD that came with the boxed version you're more likely to ignore making a backup.
I also like downloads better because you save money by avoinding sales tax (in most states and some countries, though some countries charge VAT or sales tax all the same for downloadable product too). You also however save on shipping cost. And there is the 'instant gratification' experience for having it almost instantly, thanks to broadband internet speeds.
I like downloadable much better, both as a buyer and as a vendor.
