Have you try using raytrace softshadows for the sunlight. It have a very
nice effect and you can control the radious distance of it.

Is there a way to control the intensity of the shadows cast by the Sun
Light used in a Realistic Sky atmosphere? (If not, I think there
should be.)
Similarly, any suggestions on setting for softening the shadows cast
by the Sun Light?
