Hi, Philip

Welcome back to the group and to Carrara.

I hope I can give you some answers other are welcome to jump in with
more info.
1. I'm not sure what you mean by viewport. Are you refering to the
assemble room camera view?
That is by default your render camera. Personally I use the director
camera view or have the 4 window view to compose my scene and only use
the render camera view to see how it will look in the final render. Just
my preference when I work. I don't have any problems with getting any
distortion.
2. The shader room was redesign and it has more advance features than
before. Going from C3 to C5Pro  is like night and day. Shading is a
pleasure to use specially with the advance 3D view.
3. Lots of changes in the import and export with more import format. I
just imported a 29meg IGES file into carrara 5Pro with practically no
delay and it didn't even slowed down Carrara while I was moving arround
the object. What format will you be importing OBJ? There are more
options in the OBJ imported now.
4.Rendering is musch faster and you can now use Ambient occlusion and
Irradiance mapping to get even faster rendering. Very useful for flythru
style of animations.  Say for example you have a new building that you
want to present to a customer and  use the camera to fly around and move
to different areas of the outside of the building but you what your
animation to have that nice global Illumation with realistic sky setting
and trees. Well thanks to Irradiance mapping you can do that and render
your animation at a fraction of the time that it used to be. Great stuff
for architects.
Also thanks to the replicators you can have one tree replicated at
different locations of your landscape that you will use for your
bulding.

If you have any more question fell free to ask.

Ringo

1 Does the viewport still distort the composition when moving around
or zooming in and out?  It was a major annoyance for me and one that
Max did not suffer from.
2 Is the shader control much more controllable?  I do a fair amount
of architectural work and I could never seem to scale the shaders to
the composition such that they made for realistic constructions.
3 Are the import compatabilities more stable?  I used to witness
ridiculous distorions even from Amapi and Illustrator.
4 How much has the render time improved?  I use a 2.4GHz P3 with
1.3Gb ram and remember one frame with a tree (simple larch) in it
taking 45 mins to render.  Many of my images are historical and thus
forestry features regularly.

I realise these are small things to many but any info would be much
appreciated.

Regards,

Philip
