Back After updating from Quicktime 6 to Quicktime 7 I lost the Pro part which was in my QT6, so I just upgraded to the pro for QT7.
Then I went to play with the new H.264 codec which is touted as a great new feature of 7..... and I have you admit, wow, what a compression.
I started with an image sequence of about 30 frames of 232x232 pixels from BT's Santa animation (modeled in Amapi 5, rendered in Poser 4, remember the old days?). The clip, uncompressed, is about 4.7 MB.
After compressing to H.261 with medium quality it's 99 kb
After compressing to H.263 with same it's about 49 kb
After compressing to H.254 with same settings it's about 29 kb
WOW. Now that's a case where there's significant amount of background pixels that don't change color. Furthermore, the compressed/encoded animation looked a tiny bit lighter and with less contrast. Perhaps that's a tradeoff for using that codec. But still, wow. What a compression.
