maps that I've come across:
Paint.net (Student project that was sponsored by Microsoft and
similar to a lightweight version of PhotoShop, PC only Win 2000+)

Artweaver (Similar to Corel's Painter. Like Painter it is heavy with
menus and has a large natural media toolset)
