You are correct. He used HDRI and Global Illumination,. Its what gives
the very realistic lighting and shadows.

There is a soft shadow. It is extremely light, but you can barely
notice it when you concentrate on the spot before she approaches it.
Probablly due to global illumination settings and or HDRI map.
This is a very nice demo. Very good fire and texturing overall.
Animation is good, with its bouncing and swaying motion.
Two thumbs up.
