Back I have an iMac G4 800MHz (1Gb Ram) at home and it works well for modeling (as long as there aren't too many trees) but it's a little sluggish doe rendering. I had a 1.8MHz G5 (2Mb Ram) at work and couldn't complain. Of course faster is always better.
If you're on a budget, I'd recommend getting a previous generation 2GHz G5 (about $1500 refurb) and pack it full of Ram ($350 for 4Gb, $750 for 8Gb at www.Ramseeker .com). The memory chips the new systems use is still very expensive. The video card will improve interactive rendering (open GL) but not final render speed.
