Back I think you can animated the alpha setting for it's texture for a more manual approach. This will make it fade in or out of existance; applies if you have C4 or the C5 Beta. Otherwise, you might consider multi-pass rendering (render several times for each "group" of objects, like whats in the foreground, the character, and the background) and composite it back together in a application like After Effects which can fade in and out individual layers.
This technique can also save you time if you are rendering a still camera because you only process and render the background elements one time.
