Add a primitive cube in the same place as the ball, aligned with the direction of the spin. Make the ball a child of the cube and apply the modifier to the cube.

You can place keyframes in 180? increments. Make sure the distance traveled between each keyframe is half the perimeter and that the tweeners for rotation matches the postion. If you're not moving in a single plane, link your ball to an invisible object and move in one direction relative to that object. rotate the object to adjust the direction of the ball.
Good luck,
Eric
