Although there isn't a forum for Carrara at CGTalk, it can be
discussed there.  I've read numerous threads about Carrara and they
tend to be on the long side of things.  Carrara is recoverying lost
ground of popularity.  It predecessors, Ray Dreams and Infinity were
well known names and were, to a limited extent, used in the industry.
This ensures numerous "older/experieced" 3D artists keep an eye out
for Carrara even if they don't use it.

In fact, one of our own, Mike Moir, has participated in several of the
competitions they hold with Carrara.  He does really good work and I
could be mistaken on this, but I think he models everything with only
the Carrara toolset without the help of a dicated modelling package
like Hexagon.

I doubt procedural animations is patiented.  With any scripting
language that has access to the animation system, this sort of things
should be possible.
