The object may be somewhere out there in CarraraLand. While the object is still selected, go into the Motion tab in the Properties Tray and see where it's placed. Change the XYandZ coordinates to zero and see if you can see it in the center of the scene.
Another thing: if the object is huge, you might be inside it. Check the dimensions in the Properties Tray.

In the Properties Tray, go to the Motion tab and look at the dimensions. If it says "nan" that means it didn't import correctly. (I actually don't know what nan means but I can tell you, when that's happened to me, it means failure. I don't have a solution for this either. I've tried and tried to figure out one. Sorry.
