Back Hi Eric,
Don't know if I understand what you exactly want, but have you tried using the new "Bridge" tool? It also works for joining/linking two different objects together. I just tested it and linked a text "3" object to a text "4" object. Seems to work fine.
You can view how it works here:
<http://server2.eovia.com/demos/hexagon1_2/bridge_carafe.html>
or
<http://www.eovia.com/products/hexagon/hexagon1_2.asp> - Look for "Bridge Tool" heading.
Hope that helps some.
Cheers.
