I have not read all of this thread, but it would seem that you have CS3
and would like to display reference images on the VM Grid planes.
This is possible in CS3 - when you are in the modeling room the docker
on the right has three tabs in a row it, Modeling - UV Mapping - and
Global click on the GLOBAL tab. The rest should be self explanatory.
