Hi Don,

This is a feature that already exists in Carrara.  Here are the steps
in how to get an image dipsplayed in the Vertex Modeler (reference -
CS4 PDF Manual, pages 499-500):

1) After inserting a Vertex Model in the Assembly Room, double-click
on it to go to the Vertex Modeler.
2) Go to the "Global" tab in the VM Properties tray.
3) In the Backdrop section, check the "enable" box for which panel
perspective you wnat the image to show up in.
4) Then go to the "Load Image File" button and click it. Afterwards,
go to the image file on your hard drive, CD, etc. that you want
displayed and select it.

You should now see the image in the selected 3D window.

Hope that helps.

Cheers.
