The particle system and the replicator use the same technology.
replicators come from the particle system.

I use both of them.

For example I use the replicator to have an army of 1000 Vickies from
Poser by just using one  Vicky. So does the particle emitter.

I imagine replications are copies of the replicated object.  Are
particles
seudo replications?  In other words, is the object used for the
particles
the only object that's really in the scene or are there actually 50000
real
copies in the scene?
