Back Yes, for the most part anyway.
You can export as an object and as Pascal said, merge equal points and normals and it should import ok. Then you can import it and ungroup it in Carrara if need be.
Now if you have a smoothed organic form with a Boolean in it or something then you can essentially forget about it and it will be messy in Carrara no matter what as far as I can tell.
You can also take your model into the VM and clean it up if you need to by converting it to a VM object.
I don't have this down 100% myself, but I think messing with the import settings on the Carrara end will help some too. Smoothing angle settings and so forth..
Try a few of those and see how close you can get it.
One last idea in your case is that you can take the smoothing out in hexagon and then import as an object in Carrara and then convert to a VM model and smooth it in the VM.
This might help you out as well.

I exported a file that I modeled in Hexagon into Carrara 4 Standard only to find the surfaces of the object much smoother (almost 'blobby', if that's a word) than they were in Hexagon.
Does anyone know how to export into Carrara so that your model remains essentially the same as it was in Hexagon?
