Back Hi,
If you have Shader Ops, there is a tool Edit|Apply Shader to Selected Items that will do just that. Select all you want, objects and groups, click the menu item and then pick the master shader from the drop down.
If you don't have Shader Ops, it will still work in evaluation mode. It will only do 5 objects a time, but you can keep selecting it until it applies to all the objects you have selected which is still often quicker than manually doing it.
