I ran some tests and on a 100meg network it would take a very long time for the other machine to get the data needed to begin a render. On a complex scene my main machine would complete the entire scene before the network machine would start. I noticed that the network switch was constantly transferring data and figured that this may be a network speed problem.
Once I upgraded to a gigabit network the other machine started it's rendering very quickly. It was a new machine I built just for network rendering and had an Athlon 64 3200 processor. My dual proc Athlon MP 2600's, which I used as the master, would render things briskly but having a faster machine on the network end really makes a difference. The network blocks took about the same amount of time to render as each one of my master machine blocks and that included the data transfer time.
Since your network machine has dual procs then it would take twice as long for the data to get to the other machine. It's sending the information needed for both blocks. In your case a gigabit switch would probably be a necessity.
Prices have come down on gigabit switches. I used a Linksys EG005W 5-port switch and just connected it to my existing network. Most new machines come with gigabit on the motherboard. If yours doesn't have it, the price of the cards has come down as well. I check prices online before I buy anything and www.newegg.com <http://www.newegg.com/> has consistently been close to the cheapest. In some cases they are a few dollars more but it's worth that to not have my personal information spread all over the web.
I did run into some problems with the network rendered blocks being pasted into the picture with pixels. I thought it was plug-ins but I had the same problem rendering simple scenes without using any plug-ins. Anyone else have this problem?

Hmm, the one thing no one has mentioned yet - is that the N blocks never look like they are doing anything. What I mean by that, is the ones on your host machine show line by line as they are rendering, but the N blocks don't do that. They just sit there until they are done and then BLIP they disappear
and show up in the next spot to be rendered. They are always slower to do their job than the host machine blocks (unless your render machine for some
reason was your super fast CPU and your host machine was a slow dog of a machine, I guess). Anyway, I remember the first time I got it going (network rendering) I thought something was wrong, until one of the gray blocks disappeared and showed up further down the picture (and I could see that the area where it had first been was done).
So, walk away and come back in awhile and see if those weren't actually rendering? If your remote computer is really slow, sometimes it can actually slow down the render instead of helping.
