Simply put, DVD come in two basic formats + and -.   Both work fine on
a player but the sign must match the type of burner you have.  For
example, I have a DVD+R/RW.  I can not write to the DVD-R discs to
make DVDs from them (but it will read a DVD-R disc).  Some burners are
+/-, which means it'll take either format, which is a very good thing.

RW means it can use a rewriteable DVD, which can erase and write again
to the DVD. However, only have 50% of the DVD players (to the
television) will work with a RW disc, so that's not a good choice for
a final distributed version.

stupid question but when shopping for dvds to burn how do I know the
difference between real and data?  All I see is dvd-r/+r/rw.  The last
ones I bought were Memorex dvd-r 8x.  Were these data dvds?  Thanks
for the info.
