This is normal.

It can be waiting for something. If you have a plugin on your main machine, you must have that plugin on the node, and you will get the serial number registration dialog the first time you use it, or sometimes the first time it's run. That hangs the node until completed.

Mostly, all that's saying is that it cannot talk to its copy. Windows firewall needs to be told that Carrara is ok, on both machines. If you are using Norton, you need to turn off the internet worm protection, it consistently thinks Carrara is a worm and pops up a dialog (and freezes the program).

You might also want to shift the main port to 6020. Some people have had problems with that.

Enable the logging function on the network rendering, that will tell you a little. Unfortunately, there's no "test" button other than doing it, and the "N" box is the same from all machines, which does not help others, but is of no consequence to you.
As others have said, network rendering can lag a bit, so you want a scene that takes a minute or so to render normally. In an animation, I generally have the nodes pick up the animation after the first frame.
