Probably not the best person to voice an option, since I don't have
Carrara up on my network (which is currently down), but here are a
view ideas:

Carrara's network is seen as a worm type virus by anti-virus programs.
You will need to either disable the worm protection or turn off the
anti-virus to make the program not hang up.

You should double check all plugins are also installed on all nodes
machines.  Weird stuff can happen if you are using a plug-in on the
main machine but it's not available on the node.

All nodes have to be the same on every computer.  Also, You might have
a process using the default 5020 node already on one of your machines.
Try using a different node value, which would be the same on all
machines.

Give it time.  If you have some heavy textures or other data from the
main machine to the little nodes, there will be a visible delay
between startups of the nodes (and they all don't start at the same
time, from my understanding).  Henceforth, you'll see one machine at a
time gets a new render block.

Simple scenes or scenes that render too quickly will not invoke the
nodes, because the main machine finished it all before the other nodes
were ready to join in. -- test with high settings and caustics etc to
lengthen the render times.

Thats all I can suggest.  I'll have to deffer to a more techy-type to
more specific answer.
