IMHO, Autodesk acquired Alias for all of the pre-vis technology to fill the
holes in the Autodesk CAD lines.  They have long tried to get CAD users to
buy 3DS Max as a pre-vis solution -- even creating a hybrid called Viz --
but they have consistently failed to do this.  The entertainment stuff makes
noise, but it's the pre-viz stuff from Alias that is really interesting.

The Maya portion of the deal is significant in the entertainment space, but
it does not really add a lot to the bottom line for Autodesk, which does
over a Billion dollars of business per year and less than 20% of it coming
from their entertainment group (formerly Discreet).  There will likely be a
couple of different power plays as Autodesk decides what to do with the
Toronto-based Alias dev teams (3D animation for Autodesk is developed in
Montreal) and which 3D animation tool will see life beyond 2007.

With this acquisition, Autodesk now owns about 80% of the high-end
development seats in the market doing games and movies, so there is really
no reason to lower prices.  If anything, it puts more pressure on the
already-under performing Softimage/XSI group at Avid since they lost (in
some analyst estimates) as much as 15% of their install base in the last 12
months to Maya and Max.

BTW, did you all notice the prices on the Eovia products? ;-)  Watch for the
next Eovia newsletter, coming soon.

Good points.

In my opinion XSI is a much better product than Maya and Lightwave.
Lightwaves problems are many and they had to re-structure cause they
haven't been making profits. Same reason why they had to re-reduce their
prices.
Now AutoDesk my want to look into XSI but they won't bother with LW.
Will Autodesk keep the higher prices? I think they will why would they
reduce prices when they are currently making profits.

Good news is that we have companies like Eovia that produce excellent
software at affordable prices.

I read this last night from 3DTotal.  I wonder what's up with all the
mergers going on right now; Adobe gets Macromedia, Autodesk(formerly
Discret) gets Alias, Corel buys the Paint Shop software, and Microsoft
acquires even more companies (specifically game companies).

According to what I read, this is Autodesk's 17th acquistion. Question
is now, what do they plan to do with Wavefront and Maya?  I doubt they
will continue these products which costs less than their flagship
product, although, I think they will incorporate some of the
technology into Max.

And unlike Lightwave and SoftImage (XSI), Autodesk has not been
decreasing their price to expand their markets. So does that mean that
AutoDesk will be looking into those applications/companies as well?
