Back I think you made the right choice. IMO, Carrara is way easier to ramp up to speed with and faster with seeing results than Blender, even though Blenderis free. Have you tried downloading Blender yet? Go ahead and then, *without reading manuals*, create a simple primitive-based pencil model in Carrara and then try it in Blender and see how long it takes you. I think that may prove to be a good test. :)
