This is a very late response to your post. I experienced the same problem this weekend and banged my head agains the wall. I ended up splitting the object in 2 and apply a seperate shader on each part.
After finding your post, I did some texts. As long as I keep the existing textures or rename them, things work fine. If I delete a texture, it gets messed up.
BTW, the shading domain section in the manual needs a serious rewriting!
