Back I haven't used Hexagon, but the tool you describe sounds great.
I've envisioned something similar which uses the physics engine to let you drop objects onto each other, so that they settle into a natural position. You could drop apples into a bowl, for instance, and they would nestle together properly. Or put a whole bunch of Christmas ornaments above a tree and drop them all at once, whereupon they fall until they hang on the branches.
You could use the existing physics engine to do this, but it would take forever , calculating a lot of unnecessary bouncing and so forth. I picture my "drop" feature as something that that basically starts with simple collision detection, and then fine tunes the result with a sort of simplified quasi-physics.
