A primative model is simply different than a vertex model by the way the program handles the data of the object. A primative model should be considered set in stone, meaning you don't want to modify or do anything complex with it. Like a prop seen in a background of a stage. Primative models do not have as much data as vertex models, so they taken up considerably less disk space for the computer to store and to process.
Vertex models can have morph targets, explict animation (well, more morph targets if refering to C4 over C3), and many other characteristics from the modeling room.
Primative models can be later converted into the VM but this trianglates the model and may change normals and other characteristics.
However, if disk space is not an concern, one can easily use the Vertex Models for everything and you wouldn't have any problems.
