The moire pattern is a result of the final rendering
resolution being too low. If you rendered the image
at, say, 500 pixels across, render it again at 2000 pixels
and I'll bet it will look good.

OR it could be from using a low quality anti-aliasing setting.
If you have this at "fast," you might want to try a step or
two higher. Just remember that this can increase rendering
time considerably.

No. It's best to use high resolution images for your bump
maps. Carrara needs the data to properly render the bump.
But when the final rendering doesn't have enough pixels in
it to provide enough details, then Carrara has to guess what
color each pixel will be and you see moire patterns or jaggies
no matter how you crank up the anti-aliasing.

Maybe, but you should always prep your texture map to match
the proportions of the object on which you are projecting it.
It the exterior dimensions of the feather (or wing) is 3" X 4"
then the 3 by 4 ratio needs to be kept for the texture map.
If the map has to stretch in either direction when projected,
you aren't going to get good results.
