Yes, 2D is often better for illustration. My rule of thumb is that the simpler I can illustrate a concept, the better. But 3D frosting is often tasty to my clients. Example: a 3D pie chart might be preferrable to a perfectly acceptable 2D one.

25% 3D and the rest 2D.
