Hi Craig,

Well, you just stole the preview of my Decals II article in the
upcoming edition of 3dXtract. :) It goes into how to do engravings
w/o the need use of modeling.

However, engravings on certain rounded objects can be kinda tricky with
the Decal II method. So you can always use the a simple Flat Mapping
method with a texture map in the bump channel. This, I feel is
probably the "fastest " way of doing it.

Here is an example of a coated Bayer pill with text engraving:

Basically, it will be your 2D texture map that will determine the look
of the engraving. I used letters with beveling inside and out.

This method should also work for your guitar image, but my Decal II
tutorial may give you more options with this type of image. If you
can 't wait until the issue comes out, then I can send you the tutorial
text with a few images.
