There are a number of ways to do this. The easiest way would be to use Anything Grooves. However you can use the spline modeler as suggested, the vertex modeler to actually build the surface or a boolean operation.

Using the boolean operation you need to modify the main object to any kind of usable results. Open the base object in the vertex modeler add try to increase the surface geometry along the area were you want to perform the boolean. Try your best to make sure you have small evenly spaced polygons or triangles. This way, the boolean operation will have a good surface structure to work with and there will be less potential for bugs in the geometry.

If this pill is a tablet, I would suggest doing this in the spline modeler. That way you could add the text and an ellipse, combine as compound, and, essentially, extrude the text backwards into the pill.

You could use booleans but they don 't always work like you want them
to so I would suggest looking at Anything Grooves.
