Back This is a bug/limitation of the .3ds export function in Carrara combined with the way the files are saved in Carrara. Most shaders will receive there own instance when saved in a non-native Carrara file format. This is done to prevent problems when opening the file in another program that may or may not support instances or features in Carrara. We will look into this issue and see if we can find a better way to do this in a future version of Carrara.

Subject: [Carrara] 3DS Importing
OK, Has anyone experienced this problem or am I doing something wrong
or have something set wrong?
Up till last month, I had a membership to "Mesh Factory ".(
http://www.meshfactory.com/main_frames.htm ). Great models, good
detail, good textures.
One of the models I use a lot is their F-18F. It has 75,761 vertices,
139,173 faces, 108 sub-objects, and 112 texture maps. You get a
choice of 3ds max, 3ds, lws, and maya formats. Of course, I use the
3ds format imported into Carrara. Now here is where my problem come
into play. I import the model, it takes less than a minute to import.
I manipulate my scene the way I want, render my image. No problem.
The problem comes when it 's time to save. I save and set "Use Local
Settings " (default). It takes 22 minutes to save. At first I thought
my system had had locked up. I would have to use the task manager
and "End Task " and the next time I used the model, would start from
scratch. But one time I had to leave my computer after I started the
save (always hoping it would work)and when I came back it had
completed the save. The model would import fine into Bryce and save
fine in Bryce but I didn 't want to use Bryce, I wanted to use
Carrara. So when I realized the model wasn 't locking up my computer
but just taking a long time, I started looking at settings. What I
discovered was that when I imported the model each object (108 of
them) had their own shader. BUT... each shader was identical. In
other words, each shader was a layered list of all the textures (112)
parametricly mapped to each object (108). So I had 108 master shaders
that were identical. So I spent the next 2 hours deleting all but one
master shader and then going to each object and re-assigning from the
default shader to the one master shader I didn 't delete. Now when I
went to save my updated model, the save took 2 minutes. I checked the
directory and the orginal 3ds model is 3,864 KB (not including all
the bmps)in size, the first carrara file (22 minute save) is 37,711
KB in size, and the new carrara file (2 minute save) is 19,907 KB in
size. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
