I know this is OT but I'm trying to find a good starting language and
some tutorials for my 9 year old who is interested in learning programming
concepts. It's obviously too early for her to be getting into anything too
complex, but I was thinking that there must be something better than the old
BASIC language that I started on for a beginner these days. Surely there is
a refined xtalk language or something with some elementary-school level
tutorials out there for young programmers to cut their teeth on. She's
*very* interested in how computers work, and rather than discourage her by
telling her it's too complex, I'd like to give her a simple language with
some tutorials to get her started. It needn't be a very functional language,
it just needs to be enough to keep her occupied while the underlying
concepts sink in.

How did you guys start out? For me it was BASIC on the c64 in the early
80's, and I didn't really move beyond that until C came into common usage in
the late 80s. It was a rough start for me, especially with no one to explain
the concepts to me, so I would like to make it a bit easier on her than it
was for me. I know some of you guys are significantly younger than I am (not
that I'm *old*, mind you <g>) and probably have a better idea of what
languages people are using to start out on these days. Any suggestions or
links are appreciated.
