Re: Flash versions query 2004-04-09 - By scootersimp
Back Hi, Brian, I am brand new to this group, but have been using Flash practically since the beginning. Let me tell you what I know about it.
Originally, Flash was a product called FutureSplash owned by a company with the same name, I believe. That's why you have things like FSCommands, the FS stands for FutureSplash. As Macromedia typically does whenever they buy a product they promptly renamed it to Flash. The early versions of Flash, up to version 4, were strictly intended for vector graphics and animation, with some support for audio. But the audio compression was not very good, so what you could do with audio was limited. Video support was non-existent.
In version 4 they introduced MP3 compression on audio, which opened up a whole new world of multimedia presentations using Flash. At this point was where you were starting to see a lot more Flash-based web sites out there, instead of simply adding some Flash content to an HTML based site.
In version 5 they introduced expanded support for audio, including importing MP3 audio and they started expanding ActionScript.
Then MX signaled the transition of Flash from a vector graphics and animation tool into a application development environment. ActionScript was reworked to comply somewhat with the ECMA standard and become more object-oriented and audio support was expanded greatly and video support was added through the use of the Sorenson Spark Compression. There was still a lot there for both the designer and the application developer.
Then MX2004 is another major transition for Flash. ActionScript is now pretty close to being totally ECMA compliant and object-oriented. New development tools were added to make it easier to build applications and connect to external data. There is a lot more for the developer here and not as much for the designer, although there are still some things there.
I hope this helps some.
