Back Yeah, I ran into this problem a while back. The only Carrara only solution I found was to start with my object in the Spline Modeler and from the menu select Geometry > Extrustion Preset > Spiral. I don't remember what number I had to enter to get the best results, but I found it to be totally unintuitive, and the results were, at best, not really that great.
This is one of the reasons I bought Amapi to model objects. Some just don't work well in Carrara. I'm not sure if the older, free version of Amapi will do what you want, but the newer demos will if you need something temporary. At least the method above works to some degree and you might be happy enough with that.
