Back I've never heard of a feature that disappeared completely, can you name one?
I understand its bad practice, but in flash's history, did it really happen?

It was also intentionally *not* documented because of the fact that it was a hack for backward compatibility and is likely to disappear in the next version. I wouldn't make my code rely on it if I were you. Better, instead, to have your constructor build any movie clip assets you need, since that will continue to work indefinitely, and solves all of the same problems.
