I've never heard of a feature that disappeared completely, can you name one?

I understand its bad practice, but in flash's history, did it really happen?

   Not really. It's likely not to work beyond MX 2004, and was implemented
specifically for backward compatibility with MX. It was also intentionally
*not* documented because of the fact that it was a hack for backward
compatibility and is likely to disappear in the next version. I wouldn't
make my code rely on it if I were you. Better, instead, to have your
constructor build any movie clip assets you need, since that will continue
to work indefinitely, and solves all of the same problems. Read Colin
Moock's comment below the original post.
