Oooh Scenes.
Don't like working with scenes. Give always problems in the longrun plus
bloats your swf to humongus proportion.
If you want to make a modular project, work with seperate swf movie (use
loadMovie or loadMovieClip)
Much easier, files are less bloated,..ectera,...

wondering about Scenes... other than designer benefits such as
organizing materials in a project, is there any benefit to the user?

That is, if a project is split into multiple scenes, the end user still
has to load all scenes from the top, not just Scene 1 right?

So... assuming that's true, what's a good way to make a project modular
so that the end user just loads one scene at a time... or just sections
as needed, and when they choose to move on to another part, that other
part is then downloaded... I know I see a lot of sites where after
you're in you click on a menu item and that brings up another preloader.
What's going on behind the scenes?

example http://charliehall.com  -- once loaded if you click on Resource
hall or Dicography you see another preloader ... is that just
dynamically loading another movieclip you think? The initial preloader
says loading shell... which is a hint I guess. Cool site btw.
